Brighton Neurological Reconfiguration

The existing Neurosurgery facility at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath needed to be relocated to Brighton. The project required two existing general theatres to be refurbished to more specialist Neurological standards, and the provision of a new 4-bed Theatre Recovery ward and 3-bed HDU ward, plus all associated accommodation.

The project was completed in June 2015 in time for the long-scheduled relocation of the neurological department. The project required extensive electrical and mechanical upgrades to the existing services, including two new Air Handling Units to cater for the enhanced clinical requirements.

The site was challenging as it is located on a subterranean floor level. Live clinical Post-Op and HDU wards were operational throughout the works, so particular attention and care was required within the programming of the work. Particular attention was also required for the Neuro patients and post-operative care carefully considered.

Private funding was available to enhance the lighting; Zumtobel diurnal fittings, which mimic the natural light colour and intensity throughout the day, were chosen, which were paired with floor-to-ceiling Altro Digiclad photo panels depicting views from Ditchling Beacon.

Initial feedback from the Trust has been very positive, and the clinical team are very pleased with the high standard of finish achieved by the project team.
