Frankham Consultancy have successfully completed a healthcare project at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which is now up and running to the delight of both the trust and patients alike.

The Imaging Service at Basildon & Thurrock University Hospital (BTUH) had received significant capital investment in recent years for the procurement of a range of technologically advanced new and replacement equipment to facilitate enhanced services to patients.

Increased service provision and demands had seen an increase in patient throughput with a resulting pressure on the limited available patient waiting provision. The Imaging Department Redevelopment looked to address inadequacies within patient spaces through reorganisation and redevelopment.

The redevelopment programme provided a fit for purpose facility in which the privacy and dignity of patients can be maintained during the process of attending for essential diagnostic examinations and therapeutic interventions.

Frankham were appointed for a full architecturally led Multi-Disciplinary Service for internal alteration and refurbishment to the Imaging Unit for Basildon and Thurrock
University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The multi-disciplinary team was appointed to take the project on under the SBS framework agreement, stage 1 through to 8.

Frankham were initially appointed up to the preparation and issue of a Full Business Case to the Trust (NHS Blue Book Stage 2) pending Full Business Case approval.

The main objectives of The Imaging Department Redevelopment programme were:

• To address privacy and dignity issues within the clinical department and compliance issues with CQC outcomes.
• To improve patient safety in the Imaging Recovery facility.
• To provide allocated adult and children’s waiting and recovery.
• To provide a clinical environment suitable for people with learning difficulties, dementia and other cognitive challenges.
• To separate in-patient and out-patient flows.
• To better utilise space in line with modern practice and in conjunction with Estates Strategy for the site.

Options were identified which maximised space for provision of privacy and dignity for patients and which held the potential to unlock the clinical spaces within the department.

Ultimately the combined clinical and financial benefits of a reduced reception and relocate Inpatient X-Ray to provide MSSA compliant recovery space adjacent to Main Street was adopted.

Following the successful approval of the business case, FCG were appointed for the remaining stages 2-8. Due to the project being a live environment a complex phased approach was adopted during the design, with the works split over 2 levels with a phased approach within those levels.

A single Contractor, Davis Construction was appointed to undertake the works. The fit out of the new x-ray Fluoroscopy rooms were carried our under separate turnkey contracts managed independently by the trust.
